My name is Jayson Lum and I am a 23 year old powerlifter. I am originally from the island of Oahu in Honolulu, Hawaii. In May of 2015 I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health Science with an emphasis in Public Health at the University of Nevada, Reno. I just recently received my certification as a USAPL Club Coach. Powerlifting was not my first love although I always had a passion for lifting. I have only competed in about 5 competitions and have grown from each experience. This sport has taught me so much and am blessed to have family and friends who have supported me through each step.
The gym I currently train at is called American Iron Gym in Reno, Nevada. This gym has all the tools and opportunity for anyone who wants to get stronger or be in the best shape. Lifting in this gym has definitely shaped my powerlifting and I have the best coaches to definitely thank for that. I would strongly urge for anyone to have a coach in anything you do because there are different ways of improving your technique whether it’s in powerlifting, weightlifting, bodybuilding, or any sport in general. I always try to seek other people’s advice when it comes to my technique because I know there is always room for improvement. Powerlifting is such a humbling sport and it can reveal not only your strengths but your weaknesses. I encountered that recently after my last USAPL competition where I did not do as well as I should have. My training was great leading up to the comp but it just wasn’t there, and that’s okay. I feel like you have to be in love with the process and worry about the total later when it’s time to step up onto that platform and show them what you got. I love this sport and am going to give it everything I have until I am ready to walk away from it which hopefully won’t be for a while. I hope this sport will be fulfilling for you as it is for me. Mahalo.
